About Mount Raung

Mount Raung is an active volcano standing on the border of three regencies: Banyuwangi, Bondowoso, and Jember. Its main attraction is the giant dry caldera at its summit—one of the largest in Indonesia—as well as the hiking trail to Sejati Summit, which requires hikers to traverse a narrow ridge with the aid of ropes (via ferrata) above a caldera abyss hundreds of meters deep. Due to the risk involved, the climb to Sejati Summit must be accompanied by a certified local guide and requires the use of safety equipment (harness, rope, carabiners).

Hiking Trails

Basecamp (559 masl) – East Summit (3,290 masl), total ascent ± 2,731 m Basecamp–Pintu Rimba: 45 minutes (motorbike) / 90 minutes (truck). Pintu Rimba–East Summit (pure trekking): ± 6 hours 50 minutes

Guselan Basecamp is located at an altitude of 559 masl, in Sidomulyo Hamlet, Jambewangi Village, Sempu District, Banyuwangi Regency, East Java. This trail has a religious appeal that other Raung trails do not possess: along the hiking route, 99 boards featuring the Asmaul Husna (names of Allah) are installed, starting from Pintu Rimba (the first board) to Post 9 / Kumang Setiapala (the 99th board). This trail ends at the East Summit of Mount Raung (3,290 masl), not at the Sejati Summit as the Kalibaru/Sumberwringin routes do.

Tips & Gear

  • A certified local guide is mandatory, especially for the Jambewangi segment (Guselan Basecamp, Banyuwangi).
  • Harnesses and other gear will be provided by the Raung Outdoor team.
  • Check weather conditions the day before departure; the ridge trail is extremely dangerous during high winds or thick fog.
  • Regarding water availability, we have installed several 60 to 120-liter drums at Post 5, Post 7, and Post 10 (sand camp).
  • Temperatures in the caldera area can drop below 5°C—bring a thick jacket, sleeping bag, and gloves.
  • Do not go solo hiking on the Raung trail; travel in a group and be accompanied by a guide at a minimum.
  • Taking the Jambewangi trail (Guselan Basecamp)? Enjoy the 99 Asmaul Husna boards along the trail starting from Pintu Rimba—keep it clean & do not deface the boards.
