When people say they are “climbing Raung,” they could be referring to different targets. The two most frequently discussed are the East Summit and the True Summit. Both are on Raung, but the experience and risks are very different.

True Summit

The True Summit (often recorded at approximately 3,344 masl) is the summit known for its via ferrata terrain: climbers cross a narrow ridge with the help of ropes above a deep caldera abyss. The route there generally goes through Kalibaru or Sumberwringin and demands experience in extreme terrain, safety equipment (harness, rope, carabiner), and the accompaniment of a certified local guide.

East Summit

The East Summit is at 3,290 masl and is reached via the Jambewangi trail, without a via ferrata segment. The challenges remain real: a long climb of about 2,700 meters, cold air, and sandy terrain at Camp Pasir. In return, you get a sunrise above the clouds and a view of the crater from a close distance.

Staged Route to the True Summit

If the True Summit is your dream, there is nothing wrong with planning a staged route. Start with medium mountain climbs to build stamina and camping habits, continue to mountains over 3,000 masl with overnight camping, then add experience in open and windy terrain. A climb to the East Summit via Jambewangi can be a good intermediate step: you get to know the character of Raung (cold, sand, and wind) without the via ferrata segment.

Why Certified Guides Are Important

In open terrain with abysses on both sides, small decisions like when to stop, when to turn back, and how to connect yourself to the safety system can have a big impact. Certified guides know the trail conditions, read the weather, and understand safety procedures. Therefore, for the via ferrata segment, accompaniment is not just an extra, but a necessity.

Readiness You Need to Have

  • Fitness for long walks for several days.
  • Comfort at altitude and in open places.
  • Ability to follow instructions with discipline, including regarding safety equipment.
  • Mental state prepared to turn back if conditions do not support it.

How to Choose?

Be honest about your experience. If you have never used basic climbing gear and are not accustomed to exposed terrain, the East Summit is a more reasonable target. If the True Summit is a long-term goal, first gather experience on high mountains and easier technical climbs. A summary of the routes is in the comparison of the three Raung routes, and details per post for the Jambewangi route are in the Jambewangi via guide.
